Salep – Orchis morio

Salep is perennial herb with stem reaching up to 50 cm in height. The leaves are elongated; the flower is on top of the plant and in various colors. It grows in meadows, on hills, near water and on higher areas. The composition of salep contains mucus, starch and sucrose which make it useful for the treatment of inflammation in the throat, mouth, respiratory tract, inflammation of the stomach and intestines; it is also used against cough.

Medicinal use of Salep – Orchis morio

Salep has been used as a diet of special value for children and convalescents, being boiled with water and flavoured. Rich in mucilage, it forms a soothing and demulcent jelly that is used in the treatment of irritations of the gastro-intestinal canal. One part of salep to fifty parts of water is sufficient to make a jelly.
